Six platforms, four axes: curation depth, direct-booking, concierge quality, and where they actually operate. No sponsored copy, no affiliate tint. Just what a repeat luxury traveler needs to know before choosing.
The luxury villa rental market in 2026 is not one market. It is six or seven different products pretending to compete for the same booking. The right one for you depends on where you want to go, how much friction you tolerate at checkout, and whether you want a human concierge who knows the property or a support ticket queue that does not.
This is an honest ranking. We run one of the platforms discussed. We will name where we are the strongest fit and where we are not. If your destination is not one of ours, we will tell you and point you elsewhere.
The five criteria that actually matter
Every ranking has to declare its criteria upfront. Here are the five that we have watched move the actual booking decision for hundreds of travelers over the past three years.
Curation depth. Is the platform picking properties, or filtering them from an open marketplace?
Direct-booking. Can you complete the booking without a callback, an inquiry queue, or a platform fee layer?
Concierge quality. Is there a named human on WhatsApp who has walked the property, or a ticket system with 24-hour response times?
Geographic focus. Are the destinations you actually want to book covered deeply, or is your dream property one of five listings in the region?
Total cost transparency. What you see on the listing page, is that what you pay at checkout?
Airbnb Luxe
Airbnb Luxe launched in 2019 as Airbnb's luxury tier, absorbing the acquired Luxury Retreats brand a year later. The catalog is by far the largest, spanning most global destinations where a private villa exists.
The trade-off is that Luxe sits inside the wider Airbnb marketplace. Bookings flow through Airbnb's standard checkout, cancellation policy, and support infrastructure. The Trip Designer layer helps but is a scheduling layer, not a founder-hosted concierge. Traveler service fees stack on top of the nightly rate.
Best fit if: you want the biggest possible catalog and you are comfortable with a platform-mediated experience where service is fielded through a support queue rather than a named human.
VRBO Premier Host
VRBO is the Expedia-owned whole-home marketplace with a strong North America base. Premier Host is a badge earned by hosts who hit metric thresholds around booking volume, response time, ratings, and cancellations.
The important nuance: Premier is a signal on host quality, not on property curation. Two Premier Host villas next door to each other can be wildly different products because the badge is awarded to the host account, not the physical property. VRBO does not walk the villa.
Best fit if: you are booking in North America (US, Canada, or the Caribbean), you know the region well, and you are comfortable evaluating the property from photos and reviews without a curator's pre-filter.
Le Collectionist
Founded in Paris in 2013, Le Collectionist is one of the strongest curated marketplaces in Europe. Their footprint is strongest in Provence, Corsica, Ibiza, the Greek islands, Alpine chalets, and expanding presence in the Caribbean and Middle East.
The concierge layer is genuinely part of the offer, not a bolt-on. Booking is inquiry-first for most properties, which is a feature if you want a curator to shape the whole trip and a friction if you just want to complete a booking on a Thursday night.
Best fit if: your destinations are the French Riviera, Corsica, Provence, Ibiza, or the Greek islands, and you want a hands-on ops team to plan the ceremony, the chef, and the day charter as part of the package.
onefinestay
Acquired by Accor in 2016, onefinestay runs an unbranded-hotel service model in a handful of cities: Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles, Rome, St Barth. Airport meet-and-greet, in-home welcome, 24/7 staffed support.
The trade-off is the geographic ceiling. onefinestay is not present in most of the destinations serious luxury villa travelers care about, and even where they are, the roster is smaller than a category-focused player.
Best fit if: your trip is anchored to Paris, London, NYC, LA, Rome, or St Barth, and you want hotel-grade in-home services delivered under the Accor umbrella.
Luxury Retreats (folded into Airbnb Luxe)
If you are searching for Luxury Retreats in 2026, know that the brand was retired by Airbnb in 2020 and its roster was integrated into Airbnb Luxe. The original curation team dispersed. Travelers who remember the pre-acquisition Luxury Retreats experience are searching for something that no longer exists in that specific form.
The closest current equivalent in ethos is a smaller founder-run curated marketplace where a human still walks every villa. Which brings us to the last entry.
ERentals Exclusive
We are the founders of ERentals Exclusive. Full disclosure. We built this because we could not find a modern successor to what Luxury Retreats used to be: a smaller focused roster, on-site inspection, direct-booking, a named human running concierge.
We operate in 12 destinations: Miami, Mykonos, Marrakech, Tulum, Puerto Escondido, Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, Positano, Mexico City, Paros, Sifnos, Cape Town. Every property is walked before it joins the roster. Direct-booking via Stripe on 7 listings and growing. The concierge WhatsApp goes to Cameron Elder or Aurel Hesso, not a ticket queue.
Best fit if: your destination is one of ours, you want a real human concierge on WhatsApp, and you are willing to trade an enormous global catalog for depth in a smaller set of places.
How to actually choose
For a hyper-specific city (Paris, London, NYC): try onefinestay first, Airbnb Luxe second. For a European coastal destination in France, Italy, Ibiza, or the Greek islands: Le Collectionist and ERentals Exclusive both operate there, contact both. For a Latin American, Moroccan, or South African trip: ERentals Exclusive is the deeper roster. For a destination not covered by any curated player: VRBO Premier is your best bet, with the standard caveat that curation is limited to a badge.
The mistake we see repeat travelers make is defaulting to the biggest catalog rather than the deepest coverage. Airbnb Luxe has more listings in Mykonos than we do, but if you asked us which three of those we would actually recommend on a specific set of dates, we could not tell you. We can tell you that about our own roster because we walked them. That is the entire game.

Key Takeaways
Airbnb Luxe is the biggest catalog but sits inside the wider Airbnb marketplace, not a standalone collection
Le Collectionist has the strongest European footprint and a deep concierge layer, but almost everything is inquiry-first, not instant-book
onefinestay is city-focused and hotel-adjacent, so travelers wanting Med, Mexico, or Caribbean destinations often need to look elsewhere
VRBO Premier is a badge earned by hosts hitting metric thresholds, not a curation decision by an editorial team
Direct-booking with a curated marketplace like ERentals Exclusive removes the platform service fee and gives you a real human concierge on WhatsApp
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Airbnb Luxe the same as Luxury Retreats?
Airbnb acquired Luxury Retreats in 2017 and folded the inventory into Airbnb Luxe by 2020. The original Luxury Retreats brand and curation team no longer exist as a standalone entity.
Which platform has the best concierge?
Le Collectionist and ERentals Exclusive both run a real concierge layer as part of the core offer. Airbnb Luxe has a Trip Designer, which is more of a scheduling layer than a founder-run concierge.
Can I book direct with ERentals Exclusive?
Yes, on 7 listings and growing. The other properties are direct-inquiry with a same-day quote via WhatsApp. Payments run through Stripe.
What if my destination is not on your list?
We say so up front and point you to trusted partners in that region. We would rather refer than force-fit a booking.
