Easter is one of the few weeks of the year when a whole family, or a whole group of friends, can actually be free at the same time. Many European school Easter holidays fall around it, offices go quiet, and the long weekend at the end gives everyone a reason to stay the full week rather than fly in for two nights. Marrakech is close enough to Europe to make that week easy and different enough to make it feel like a real trip. An Easter trip is rarely two people. It is grandparents, parents and children, or three couples and their kids, or a group of old friends who have finally lined up a week. In a hotel that group is spread across a corridor, eats on the restaurant schedule and shares the pool with everyone else in the building. In a private villa it has one table, one pool and one team of staff who learn within a day who eats early and who wants coffee at six.

A villa also changes how you use the city. Instead of heading out every morning because the room is small, you choose one or two outings a day and come back to the house for lunch or for the afternoon. The medina and the souks, Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk and the Jardin Majorelle are the obvious first visits. Palais Eliah is the largest home in our Marrakech collection: twelve bedrooms and twelve bathrooms for up to 24 guests, set on a 10,000 m2 estate on the Fes Road corridor. It has a pool and a plunge pool, a cinema room, padel and tennis courts, a hammam, a sauna and a massage room, with full house staff. For an Easter week with three generations it solves the hardest problem, which is giving everyone space without splitting the group across two houses.

Villa Kemgia is the other large compound: nine bedrooms for up to 20 guests on 25,000 m2, with a pool, a cinema room, a tennis court, a billiard room and a library. It suits two families travelling together, where the children need a games room for the evenings and the adults want a quiet corner with a book.

Dar Tafza is the architectural choice. Designed by Studio KO, the studio behind the Musée Yves Saint Laurent, it sits on six hectares of olive grove and desert garden on the road to Ouarzazate, with a 25-meter infinity pool aimed at the High Atlas. It sleeps 20 across the main villa and a separate farmhouse pavilion, with a resident chef, butler and housekeeper, breakfast and daily housekeeping included. For friends who want the week to feel like somewhere they have never been, this is the house.

Dar Manou is smaller and warmer: seven bedrooms for up to 14 guests on a 10,000 m2 estate, Moroccan-crafted, with a riad-style courtyard, a padel court, a pool and Atlas Mountain views. It fits a group of five or six couples, or a family with grown children bringing partners.

Most families need five bedrooms, not twelve, and that is where the golf-resort villas come in. Villa Ever sits inside the Fairmont Royal Palm resort with a green-tiled pool, 3,000 m2 of lawn and garden, a petanque court and a covered terrace. Villa 178 at Amelkis has a pool, a jacuzzi, a fitness room, a cinema and a massage room. Villa Insa, also at Amelkis, adds a cinema room and a grand piano, and Villa Aurea is an art-filled home with a fireplace. Each sleeps ten with full house staff and 24-hour security.

Start with the headcount and the bedroom count, not the photographs. A group of ten that includes four children can share a five-bedroom villa easily; ten adults usually cannot. Then decide what the house needs to do for the group: courts and a cinema for teenagers, a hammam and a massage room for the adults, lawns and a petanque court for a slow family week. The shortlist usually narrows to two or three homes within one conversation.
