Where to Stay in Mykonos
Guide to Mykonos neighborhoods for villa guests. Chora, Ornos, Psarou, Elia. Which area suits your travel style and budget.
Mykonos is a small island, about 33 square miles, but the character changes dramatically from north to south. The area you choose determines your experience more than the villa itself. Here is an honest neighborhood breakdown for villa guests. Mykonos Town (Chora) The iconic labyrinthine village. Little Venice, the windmills, the best restaurants, and the nightlife. Villas near Chora let you walk to dinner and back without a taxi. The trade-off: no private beach access, and the town gets loud at night in peak season. Best for couples and friends who want to be in the action. Villa Lavan, Mykonos Ornos The family-friendly bay south of Chora. A proper sand beach with calm water, waterfront tavernas, and a village atmosphere. Villas here offer the best balance for families: beach proximity, good dining within walking distance, and a quieter pace than Chora. About 10 minutes to town by car. Psarou & Platis Gialos The glamour coast. Nammos Beach Club, designer shops, and the see-and-be-seen energy that Mykonos is famous for. Villas in this area command the highest rates on the island. If the social scene is part of why you are coming, this is where to be. If not, you are paying a premium for something you do not want. Villa Mandra, Mykonos Elia & Agrari The quieter south coast. Longer beaches, fewer beach bars, more natural beauty. Elia is the longest beach on the island and the best option for guests who want sand without the scene. Several excellent villas sit on the hillsides above these beaches with commanding views. Our Recommendation For first-time visitors: Ornos or hills above Chora. Close to everything, flexible, no commitment to one scene. For repeat visitors who know what they want: match the area to your priority (beach clubs, quiet beaches, walkable nightlife). For families: Ornos without question. Villa Naos, Kea Q: What is the best area for families on Mykonos? A: Ornos. Calm bay, family-friendly restaurants, walkable to the beach, and a relaxed atmosphere away from the party scene. Q: Do I need a car on Mykonos? A: Unless you are staying in Chora, a car or ATV is very helpful. Taxis exist but are limited in peak season. Many guests rent ATVs for flexibility. Q: Which area has the best restaurants? A: Chora (Mykonos Town) has the highest concentration. But every area has good dining within a short drive. The island is small enough that restaurant location should not drive your accommodation choice.
