The Vertical Village on the Amalfi Coast
Positano is the pastel cascade that built the Amalfi Coast in the imagination of every traveler who has ever seen a Slim Aarons photograph. The village does not have streets in the conventional sense, it has staircases, and you walk down them past lemon groves and bougainvillea to a pebble beach where John Steinbeck wrote that the place "bites deep" precisely because it is "a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone." The luxury here is not architectural restraint or modern minimalism. It is the geography itself, vertical, theatrical, sun-soaked from morning, and the discipline of villa staff who have run these terraced properties for two and sometimes three generations. Our Positano collection sits at the upper reaches of the village (the quieter cliff-top properties with panoramic gulf views) and along the seafront below, where you can walk to Marina Grande in ten minutes and to dinner at Da Vincenzo or Chez Black in five.
Starting from $4,110 per night

Where to Stay

Upper Positano (Liparlati & Mulini)
The highest residential terraces. Cooler in summer, dramatic gulf views, the original Positano villas with hand-painted ceramic floors and balcony lemon trees. Stairs are non-negotiable. Worth it for the views and the quiet.
Spiaggia Grande & Mare Center
The waterfront and central commercial spine. Walking distance to restaurants, beach clubs (Le Sirenuse pool, Hotel Pupetta), and the boats to Capri. Premium pricing for the lower elevation and walkability.
Fornillo
The smaller, quieter beach a 10-minute coastal walk west of the main port. Better swimming, less crowded, the original local beach that fashion never fully colonized. Villas here trade some accessibility for a noticeably calmer pace.
Montepertuso & Nocelle
The mountain hamlets above Positano accessible by the famous Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei). Lower density, lower prices, hiking access, and the same Mediterranean view from 400 meters up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Positano compare to Amalfi town or Ravello?
Positano is the most photogenic and the most expensive, vertical, beachfront, restaurant-dense. Amalfi town is flatter, more historic (the cathedral is the architectural anchor), with better day-trip infrastructure. Ravello sits 400 meters above the coast, quieter, more cultural (the Wagner festival, Villa Cimbrone, Villa Rufolo), with the best sunset views. Many guests visit all three in a single week from a Positano base.
Is the village walkable for older guests or strollers?
Honestly, no. Positano is staircases. Most villas have 50 to 200 steps from gate to front door. For mobility-limited guests, prioritize villas with private golf cart or driver access (a small number of upper-village properties offer this), or consider basing in flatter Praiano or Maiori instead.
Can I drive my own car?
Strongly discouraged. Parking is limited, expensive, and the SS163 is one of the most stressful drives in Europe in summer. Use private drivers (we arrange them) or the SITA bus along the coast (cheap and frequent but slow). Helicopter or boat transfers between coast towns are options for serious trips.
What about boat charters from Positano?
Excellent. Half-day and full-day charters to Capri, Li Galli, Nerano, and the Amalfi grottoes leave from Marina Grande. We arrange crewed motor yachts (8 to 12 meters typical) with captain and chef, or smaller open boats with skipper for groups of four to six. Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead in July and August.
Is the food in Positano actually as good as the reputation?
Yes, but the calendar matters. The lemon and fish are local and excellent. The pasta tradition is strong (try scialatielli ai frutti di mare). Restaurants that close in winter and reopen each April serve sharper, more focused menus through May and September. The peak August week is hot and crowded and not the most flattering window for kitchen quality.
Are Positano villas family-friendly?
Some are, many are not. The staircase question is the major filter. Beachfront villas with elevators or street-level access are the safest family choice. Upper-village properties with sea-view terraces and pools work for older children and teens but become exhausting with toddlers or babies. We screen for this on every family booking.
Best Time to Visit
Late May through mid-October is the season, with peak crowds in July and August. The sweet spot is mid-September through early October, warm sea (24 degrees Celsius), full restaurant calendar, lighter crowds, and the autumn light that locals consider the best photography window of the year. April and early May are quieter but the sea is still cold and some restaurants are not yet open. Most villa staff begin the season around April 15 and close in early November.
Getting There
Naples International Airport (NAP) is 65 kilometers north, 90 minutes by private transfer in light traffic, longer in summer. The coastal road (SS163) is famously narrow and slow but the views are part of the trip. Salerno Airport is closer in distance but with fewer flights. Helicopter transfers from Naples to a Positano helipad (Hotel San Pietro and Le Sirenuse have access) run 15 minutes and bypass the road entirely.
