About Positano

Positano is the pastel cascade that built the Amalfi Coast in the imagination of every traveler who has ever seen a Slim Aarons photograph. The village does not have streets in the conventional sense, it has staircases, and you walk down them past lemon groves and bougainvillea to a pebble beach where John Steinbeck wrote that the place "bites deep" precisely because it is "a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone." The luxury here is not architectural restraint or modern minimalism. It is the geography itself, vertical, theatrical, sun-soaked from morning, and the discipline of villa staff who have run these terraced properties for two and sometimes three generations. Our Positano collection sits at the upper reaches of the village (the quieter cliff-top properties with panoramic gulf views) and along the seafront below, where you can walk to Marina Grande in ten minutes and to dinner at Da Vincenzo or Chez Black in five.

Best Time to Visit Positano

Late May through mid-October is the season, with peak crowds in July and August. The sweet spot is mid-September through early October, warm sea (24 degrees Celsius), full restaurant calendar, lighter crowds, and the autumn light that locals consider the best photography window of the year. April and early May are quieter but the sea is still cold and some restaurants are not yet open. Most villa staff begin the season around April 15 and close in early November.

What about boat charters from Positano?

Excellent. Half-day and full-day charters to Capri, Li Galli, Nerano, and the Amalfi grottoes leave from Marina Grande. We arrange crewed motor yachts (8 to 12 meters typical) with captain and chef, or smaller open boats with skipper for groups of four to six. Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead in July and August.

Is the food in Positano actually as good as the reputation?

Yes, but the calendar matters. The lemon and fish are local and excellent. The pasta tradition is strong (try scialatielli ai frutti di mare). Restaurants that close in winter and reopen each April serve sharper, more focused menus through May and September. The peak August week is hot and crowded and not the most flattering window for kitchen quality.
