Luxury Villas in Praiano

Praiano is the quieter Amalfi Coast village between Positano and Amalfi. Cliffside villas, the Path of the Gods trailhead, and Marina di Praia. Book direct.

The Quieter Side of the Amalfi Coast
Praiano sits two and a half kilometers down the SS163 from Positano and a different trip entirely. Where Positano performs (vertical, photographed, crowded by 10 AM in August), Praiano simply lives. The village divides into two halves connected by the coastal road: the upper district of Vettica Maggiore, anchored by the church of San Gennaro and the celebrated ceramic tile floor of its piazza (lit by the sun at the right hour), and the lower harbor of Marina di Praia, a single-cove fishing village reached by a steep staircase between the cliffs. The luxury of Praiano is what it is not. It is not the place where the day boats from Capri unload three hundred tourists by lunch. It is the place where the trailhead for the Sentiero degli Dei, the Path of the Gods, the most spectacular coastal hike on the Amalfi, begins from Nocelle just above the village. Our Praiano collection is small by design, four cliffside villas chosen for the rare combination of sea-view privacy at half the per-night cost of equivalent Positano inventory, plus an unbeaten location for guests who plan to spend half their week on the water and the other half walking.
Starting from $2,945 per night

Why Praiano

The Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) hike, three hours from Nocelle to Bomerano, the single best clifftop walk on the entire coast
Africana, the cave nightclub carved into the Marina di Praia rock face, open in summer, a piece of Amalfi nightlife history
La Conca del Sogno for the fresh fish lunch at Marina di Praia, half the price of equivalent Positano restaurants
Half-day private boat from Marina di Praia to Capri or Nerano, 20 minutes either direction, with the option to anchor at the Li Galli rocks
The tiled piazza of San Gennaro, lit by the late afternoon sun, the village photograph that does not appear on Instagram in volume
Day trip to Ravello via the SITA bus or private driver, 35 minutes, the highest cultural value-per-mile on the coast

Where to Stay

Vettica Maggiore (Upper Praiano)
The original village along the SS163, with the San Gennaro church, the famous tiled piazza, and most of the village restaurants and small shops. Higher elevation, panoramic gulf views from Capri to the Li Galli rocks. The terraces of the upper villas are where Praiano sunsets become a fixed part of the day.
Marina di Praia
The tiny fishing cove reached by a long staircase between two cliffs. Two beach restaurants (La Conca del Sogno is the local favorite), one small beach club, and a handful of fishing boats. Africana, the cave nightclub carved into the rock, has hosted Jackie Kennedy and modern DJs in the same cellar. Calm in the day, surprisingly alive after midnight in season.
Nocelle (Above Praiano)
The mountain hamlet at 400 meters elevation accessible by the 1700 steps from Praiano or by car from Positano. The trailhead for the Path of the Gods. Cooler in summer, dramatically quieter, and a sub-set of our villa inventory sits up here for guests who want the hike at the front door.
Furore
The fjord village just east of Praiano. Not technically Praiano but the closest natural neighbor and the source of the Vallone di Furore, a dramatic inlet visible from many Praiano terraces. The annual high-diving competition off the Furore bridge is a July or August fixture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stay in Praiano instead of Positano?
For first-time Amalfi visitors who want the iconic vertical-village photograph and the canonical restaurants, Positano is the right pick. For repeat visitors, hikers, families with mobile teenagers, and anyone allergic to high-season crowds, Praiano is meaningfully better. The cost-per-night runs roughly 40 to 50 percent less for equivalent villa quality. The view from a Praiano terrace toward Capri is, if anything, more cinematic than the equivalent Positano view because you can see Positano itself in the foreground.
Can I walk between Praiano and Positano?
Yes, in either direction, along the SS163 (the coastal road, 45 minutes), or by the upper coastal path (90 minutes, more pleasant but stair-heavy). The SITA bus runs every 20 to 30 minutes in season and connects the two villages in 10 minutes. Most guests use the bus or a driver for the practical version of "we want dinner in Positano tonight."
What is the Path of the Gods actually like?
A three-hour clifftop walk along the spine of the Lattari mountains from Nocelle to Bomerano (or in reverse). 500 meters of elevation gain at the start, then mostly level along a path that drops straight to the sea. The views span Capri, Li Galli, Positano, and Praiano itself. Doable in regular trainers in May and October. Hot and exposed in July and August, start at 7 AM if you go in summer. The single most photographed natural feature of the Amalfi.
What about Africana, is it still a real venue?
Yes. Africana opens in late June and runs through September. Programming has shifted toward house DJs and the occasional surprise booking. The venue is the experience, you arrive by boat at Marina di Praia, walk up to the cliff, descend into the cave, and dance in a room where the floor is the natural rock. Dress code is "Amalfi summer," which means linen and white sneakers, never beach attire. Book a table if your group is more than four.
Is Praiano good for groups of 12 to 18?
Yes, with the right villa. Our larger Praiano properties (the four to six bedroom range) have the outdoor space and the dining capacity that the densely-built upper Positano villas often do not. Group hire of a private boat for the day, lunch at La Conca del Sogno, dinner cooked in the villa by a private chef, the full Amalfi day is meaningfully easier to stage in Praiano than in Positano with the same headcount.
What about wedding events?
A small subset of Praiano villas accommodate weddings up to 40 guests on the grounds. The smaller scale (versus Lake Como or Tuscany weddings) makes Praiano right for intimate destination ceremonies. Plan 6 to 9 months ahead, the spring and fall slots close out earliest. Sant'Anna church in upper Praiano is one of the most photographed wedding venues in the village.
Best Time to Visit
Same season as Positano (late May to mid-October), but Praiano holds its calm later into the summer. July and August are quieter than Positano by an order of magnitude. The mid-September to early-October window is exceptional, warm sea, full menus, no boat traffic queues at Marina di Praia. May is still cool for swimming but the village light is at its sharpest. April is too quiet, most beach restaurants have not opened.
Getting There
Same gateway as Positano (Naples International Airport, 90 minutes by private transfer along the SS163). The coastal road passes through Praiano so transfers are simply 5 minutes longer than to Positano. Helicopter transfers from Naples land at the Praiano sports field above the village (clearance required, we arrange). From Salerno Airport or train station, Praiano is closer than Positano (45 minutes versus 60 minutes). Boat transfer from Capri or Naples directly to Marina di Praia in season.
